In early 1980s Shrimati Yellubai Nagnath Manthalkar , a sex worker in Solapur, experienced firsthand the hardships of her profession and was determined to ensure a better future for her daughter, Kashibai Jadhav . She made the bold decision to remove her daughter from the area and enroll her in school, so she could pursue an education and a different path in life. Her daughter, Kashibai Jadhav, deeply appreciated her mother’s choice and recognized how fortunate she was to escape the harsh realities of sex work. She had witnessed the daily struggles, stigma, and discrimination faced by her mother and her peers, experiences that left a lasting impact on her.

Breaking Barriers: Yellubai and Kashibai’s Inspiring Journey
In the heart of a bustling, unforgiving city, Yellubai, a devoted mother and sex worker, fought against the odds to create a better life for her daughter, Kashibai. Life had pushed Yellubai into her profession, but she was determined that Kashibai would not follow in her footsteps. With unwavering resolve, she raised her daughter with love and instilled the values of dignity, self-respect, and courage. “You can’t control what the world says about you,” Yellubai often told her, “but you can control how you respond. Education and strength of character are your shields.”
Yellubai saved every spare rupee to send Kashibai to school, believing that education would be the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and stigma. However, the world outside was not kind. Kashibai faced constant whispers, harassment, and judgment from those who knew about her mother’s past. Taunts from classmates and threats from local criminals tested her resilience, but Kashibai refused to be broken. Armed with the lessons from her mother, she stood her ground, sought legal help, and reported those who threatened her.
In 2008, Kashibai transformed her struggles into action by founding Kranti Mahila Sangh in Solapur, Maharashtra. This community-based organization aimed to provide education, legal aid, and health services to women in vulnerable situations. Through tireless efforts, she helped these women find alternative livelihoods and reclaim their dignity. Kashibai became a vocal advocate for sex workers’ rights, addressing national platforms and urging government reforms to support marginalized communities.
As Yellubai watched her daughter become a force of change, she felt immense pride. Together, they had broken the generational cycle of suffering and oppression. Kashibai’s strength, compassion, and leadership stood as a testament to the power of resilience. Their story illustrates that regardless of one’s beginnings or the challenges faced, it is possible to shape a brighter future and lift others along the way.
“A world where every woman and member of the transgender community enjoys the right to live with dignity, safety, and opportunities for growth and development.”
